Educational article: What is a Brut IPA? – Introduction to the style, and beer reviews!

Lets just kick it off! A Brut IPA is a bone dry, fizzy, champagne-like and light bodied beer with plenty of hop aromatics, but not as bitterness as a typical west coast American IPA.

There isn’t any official guidelines about this style af beer, as its a newcomer on the beer scene.

Kim Sturdavant invented the Brut IPA in 2018. Kim was the brew master at Social Kitchen & Brewery. At first, he thought about calling his newly created brew a champagne-ipa, but thinking that he might upset a lot of people in a region of France - Kim settled on the name Brut IPA.

The name “brut” is taken from the terminology used to rank sweetness in Champagne and other sparkling wines - brut is the driest category in that ranking (although it is sometimes subdivided into brut and extra brut).

The trick in creating the Brut IPA is using the enzyme amyloglucosidase to break down the complex sugars yeast could not ferment on it’s own.

Since the style is still in the early stages in development, there is a lot of brewers who are experimenting with this style, they try to settle on when to use the enzyme, which the types of hops to use, and a diverse malt bill.

Does the style sound a bit tempting? Well let me quickly run a few reviews! Four in total! Hang on!

The first one!

From Mikkeller I bring you!

Mikkeller - Are Your Shore?

Which is a 6,0 % ABV, India Pale Ale, Brut Style.

The color is a clear slightly hazy pale straw yellow color, pouring a High White head, that falls to a small head.

The Aroma is quit yeasty, with a good amount of fruity notes. Fruitwise there is an array of citrus fruits Lined up, you’ll find orange, grapefruit and some lemon. Behind all The citrus fruits, there is a subtle grape and pear Ester. While there is a prominent fruity wibe going on, you’ll still notice a Malty sweet’ness with a subtle tart vinous hint.

The taste is crisp, clean and quit dry! It’s first of all hoppy! As on The nose, you’ll encounter - orange, lemon and grapefruit. Towards the back you’ll taste a yeasty Ester which is grape and pears, which slowly fades to a malty bready sweetness that ends suddenly in a dry ending.

The finish is dry with a low bitterness, It has a Low to medium carbonation, with a light body/mouthfeel.

Well I was “Shore” about one thing, and that is that this beer was great! Not The Best Brut IPA I’ve had, but it does Everything what you should expect from This particular style! Fizzy, champagne-like and light bodied beer with hop aromatics and a low bitterness.

Ohh You might notice the score on the picture, that’s because on instagram I give scores from 0 to 100 – And this beer was a solid 80 points! So this one I highly recommend trying!

The Aroma is hoppy - orange, grapefruit, stonefruits - peach, and pineapple. Other than that it has a subtle piney resinous backbone.

The taste is crisp, clean and dry! It’s very Hoppy - peach and pineapple being the most dominating. It’s not that malty sweet on the taste, more dry and subtle bitter. It has a very nice aftertaste of pine.

This was a great experience! It was spritzy, clean, crisp, and bright! This beer could easily substitut for Champagne!

Next up is not a IPA, but a Lager – and yes, still in the Brut style!

The aroma is very clean, with bright flavors of white grape and passion fruit. It has a lot of tart vinous notes.

The finish has a dry’ness, low to medium bittersweet, medium carbonation, with a medium mouthfeel.

This has to be The Best Brut style i have Ever tried - was a really good beer!A lot of Brut Styles tends to lack in flavor. I know the style is meant to finish dry and bright! But in The craft beer game brewers have to stand outside The group, and make something which leaves people wanting more, And it’s here where White Palace succeeds.

Aaaaand again, You might notice the score on the picture, that’s because on instagram I give scores from 0 to 100 – And this beer was a solid 93,33 points! So this one I Would recommend all Day long! Great stuff!

Last but not least!
